One of the best teachers I have ever encountered. After studying with him one felt, "There is no problem in recursive function theory I cannot solve" and it often turned out to be a good guess. My last memory of him is at CCNY in a meeting in honor of Emil Post where Hartley very kindly helped me find my jacket.
