Haywood Elzie McAlexander, 89, of Bassett, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at his home. He was born on February 1, 1934, to the late Elzie Sherman McAlexander and the late Fannie Haynes McAlexander. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra McAlexander Chaney. 


 


Haywood was a charter member of Christian Faith Baptist Church on Union Bridge Road in Ferrum.  Haywood worked at Bassett Walker as a sewing machine mechanic for 37 years.  He enjoyed camping, woodworking, reading and playing cards with friends.


 


Haywood is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Hilda Mitchell McAlexander; a daughter, Sarah McAlexander Turner (Posey) of Collinsville; brothers, Harvie McAlexander (Frances) of Summerfield, NC, Herbert McAlexander (Betty) of Danbury, NC, George McAlexander (Letha) of Rocky Mount, and Glen McAlexander (Ruby) of Woolwine; 4 grandchildren, Jonathan Chaney (Nikki) of Mt. Holly, NC, Christopher Turner (Brandie) of Vinton, Amanda Chaney of Martinsville, and Chelsea Turner of Collinsville; 3 great-grandchildren, Sheridan Chaney, Amara Turner, and Christopher Turner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 


The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Bassett Funeral Service chapel. Burial will be held at Fairystone Church cemetery in Stuart, Virginia immediately following the service.
