Hazel Laura Phillips O'Kernick, age 90 years, a resident of Coalton, WV departed this life Wednesday afternoon, March 2, 2016 at the Valentines Personal Care Home at Elkins, WV with her son by her side and under the care of Hospice Care Corporation. She was born Wednesday, March 18, 1925 at Norton, WV, a daughter of the late Henry W. and Flotie E. Arbogast Phillips. On January 3, 1948 at Coalton, WV she was married to Joseph O'Kernick, who preceded her in death May 24, 2007. They had celebrated sixty years of marriage. Surviving are one son, Joseph Leo O'Kernick and wife Della of Beverly; four grandchildren, Angela Barrickman and husband Brian, Christina Umbright and husband Bill, Joseph Albert O'Kernick and wife Ana, and Patrick Joseph O'Kernick and fiancée Jennifer Lewis; and six great grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas and Alexandra Barrickman, Tyler and Katie Umbright and Isabella O'Kernick; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are two brothers, Elmer and Donald Phillips; two sisters, Mary Keener and Jean Wilson. She attended the schools of Randolph County. During World War II, she worked in an ammunition factory and she was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church at Coalton. She loved giving and getting hugs. She loved her grandchildren, was well known for her bread baking and was passionate about her African violets. A private family gathering will be held. A memorial mass will be held at a later date. The Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF will be the Presider and interment will follow at the Saint Vincent Cemetery at Kingsville, WV. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the charity of your choice.

Joe, I worked at the Coalton Post Office for several years and always looked forward to seeing Mrs. o'Kernick. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word. Have thought of her many times during the years. So sorry for your loss. May God bless you.

I was so very sorry to learn of your mom's passing, Joe. I will always remember her quiet, gentle demeanor and her kind smile. She was such a nice lady and I know you will miss her very much. My prayers are with you.

Joe and family, We are so sorry to hear about Aunt Hazel's passing. My childhood memories of visits, Aunt Hazel's delicious homemade doughnuts, playing dominos and cards will be forever cherished. Tom and I are sending our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
