Hazel Ann Pleasants Hazel Ann Pleasants passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Mary Washington Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, of heart failure. Miss Pleasants, fondly known as "Hurricane Hazel", was born in Basic, Virginia, now known as Waynesboro, Virginia, on October 5, 1934. She was predeceased by her mother, Viola Taylor Higgs Pleasants; her father, Harvey Joseph Pleasants; and brothers, Harvey Jr., Edwin, Leon, Lowell David, Stephen, Clyde, and Roger. Hazel is survived by her sister, Janice Bageant of Pennsylvania; and her brother, Philip Pleasants of Alabama. She is remembered dearly by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great- nephews. After living in Waynesboro, Hazel moved to Newport News, Virginia, where she graduated from Newport News High School in 1956. She loved children so it was natural that she taught kindergarten and worked in the area of child care. Hazel also worked as a companion to the elderly and took care of her parents as their health declined. Hazel's passion was the arts-drawing, ceramics and crafts; her talent won her many awards for both painting and ceramics. After her own health declined, she moved to Hampton where she was active in the community of Langley Village. She headed up the social committee and spent time visiting the housebound, cooking for others and calling bingo. It was there that she became known as "Hurricane Hazel" as she zipped along in her electric scooter. Hazel then moved to Golden Living Care Center in Fredericksburg, where her good nature, sense of humor, and love of the color "poiple" endeared her to many. Hazel was a true lady with strong Christian beliefs that she followed throughout her life. Hazel Pleasants will be interred at Riverside Cemetery in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Friday, July 19, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. in a private ceremony for relatives and friends. She touched everyone with special love and kindness.
