Hazel F. Sanders, transitioned on August 9, 2022, at Summerset Assisted Living Community. She was born October 12, 1931, in Chapel Hill, NC to the late Marion and Mozella Foushee. Hazel received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. After graduating she began teaching in Martin County and Chapel Hill City Schools for 2 years. Upon moving to Smithfield, NC she taught with Johnston County Schools for 32 years. Hazel was a dedicated member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church where she served in many capacities including, the Usher Board, Missionary Circle, Senior Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Deaconess Council, Cheer Ministry, and Trustee Ministry. She also served as the church Secretary from 2003-2016. Hazel was a charter member of the National Association of University Women, serving in many leadership capacities including Branch President. She also was a former member and treasurer of the Modernettes Club, the Retired School Personnel of Johnston County, Fayetteville State University Alumni Association of Johnston County, National Educators Association, and NCAE Professional Organizations.
