Woodfin Funeral Chapel - Murfreesboro Obituary

Helen Laverne Sheets Emery, age 86 passed away peacefully on August 12, 2020 at her home in Murfreesboro, TN.  She was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Vernal LeRoy Sheets and Frances Ethyl Engel Sheets.  Helen grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Helen is survived by her husband of nearly 67 years, Glen Emery; daughters Katherine Daniel and Lauren Rudd (Mark Russell) of Murfreesboro; grandchildren Chris (Natalie) Rudd of Nashville, Abby (Brian) Sights of Jupiter, FL and Michael Daniel of Murfreesboro; and great-grandchildren Anna Rudd, Walker Rudd, Jack Sights and his future sister.

Helen and Glen met in college and traveled the world thanks to the US Army. She loved to learn and earned four graduate degrees from MTSU. She also enjoyed learning artistic skills and taught painting for many years.  She was an avid quilter and has made hundreds of quilts, wanting to learn and try out each new technique.  Her favorite type of quilt to make was “scrappy quilts” and she thoroughly enjoyed creating masterpieces from other people’s cast-offs.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday, August 15, 2020 from noon to 2 pm with the Funeral Service following at 2 pm at Woodfin Chapel, Murfreesboro, TN.  Masks will be required at both the visitation and the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir Memorial Fund, 210 N. Spring St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130.

Not sure what to say?

My sympathy to Glen, Kathy and all the Emery family.
I have fond memories of attending many years of ASC with the 3 of you. Lots of laughs and fun times!
God’s blessings to all the family.
From Karen Monefeldt Caton (Louise’s twin sister)

Condolences to each family member. She was so much fun to take art classes

Our love and prayers for all of you!

I love you, Helen.
Funny, whip smart, talented, and a good friend. We bonded in the Girl Scout troop she talked me into helping her with. It was there I got to know Kathy and Lauren. Good times.
Helen and I taught Sociology together at MTSU until the Army shipped the Emerys off to the Keys where Helen found a place that suited her very well. Sandals and sun. What's not to love!
I studied Scandinavian folk painting with her when they returned to the 'Boro.
She will be...

Glen and family, I was saddened to hear about Helen's passing. Even though I only knew you and Helen through MT basketball, it was always pleasant to see you both at games. God bless you.

Sorry we didn't get by the funeral home, but we love your family and wish you God's peace and rest. Sorry to not see the our crowd at a ballgame, but will look for Mr Emery, Lauren, and Mark the next time we go. God bless you and all of your family

Glen, We were very saddened to hear of your loss of Helen. You and your family will be in our prayers during this difficult time.

Helen was a Charter Member of Friendship Quilters Guild, which formed on May 13, 1995. She always made the most beautiful scrappy quilts and encouraged other guild members to design and create quilts for others in our community. She will be greatly missed.

Glen, Larry and I were saddened to learn of Helen's passing. Our thoughts go out to you and your family.
