Helen Flower Obituary
Simpsonville - Helen Flower's prayer to go home and be with Jesus was answered on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018. She was 101 years old. Helen was born in Seymour, Iowa, daughter of Bert and Blanche (Green) Long. She attended Iowa Success School in Ottumwa, Iowa, to learn office skills, and then Open Bible Institute in Des Moines, where she met her husband, Marlen Flower. She worked as Registrar at the school and at the church for eight years until they moved to Seymour to farm.
Helen excelled at gardening and sewing and cooking. She served her church as pianist, teacher, Awana leader, and mentor. She found time to sit by the piano while her children practiced to make sure they were learning correctly. She and Marlen moved to Greenville in 1997 at age 80 to be near their children. They were members of Heritage Bible Church until Marlen's death in 2007. She then attended Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville while she lived with her daughter, Lorena. She was tenderly cared for at Fairview Park Senior Living in Simpsonville for the past 20 months.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis (Ruth Ann) of Elche, Spain, and Lance (Janet) of Greenville, SC, and her daughters, Lorena (Ken) West of Simpsonville, SC, and Nancy Smith (fiance' Guy Watkins) of Greenville, SC, as well as 11 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at Mackey Mortuary on Century Drive Monday, September 24, 2018 at 3:00 with visitation from 1:30 - 2:45.
Helen will be buried in Seymour, Iowa, beside her beloved husband, Marlen.
