Helen S. Nash, a resident of Sarasota for over 35 years, died suddenly and unexpectedly Dec. 23, 2010, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, John W. Nash. Helen and John were married for 70 years.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the Toale Brothers Gulf Gate Chapel, 6903 S. Tamiami Trail.
Helen was born Jan. 29, 1917, in New York City. She was a graduate of Russell Sage College and Baypath College and for many years performed secretarial work at the newspapers she and her husband owned and published. They settled in Sarasota from Westfield, Mass. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter Claudia Hurley and her husband, Michael, of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her daughter Suzanne, and her two sisters, Jean Downes of Fort Lauderdale and Winifred Sloughter, also of Sarasota.
She is also survived by four grandchildren: Todd and John Hurley, sons of Claudia and Mike and Kristen Tudeen and Ingrid Brack, daughters of Suzanne.
She is also survived by three great-grandchildren. Alaina and Nathan Hurley are children of Todd and his wife, Wendy, of Seattle. Emily Hurley is the daughter of John and his wife, Laurie, of Reading, Mass.
Kristen and her husband, Roy, live in Portland, Maine. Ingrid lives in Brunswick, Maine. All will attend the Friday service.
Helen was a gifted musician and an accomplished organ player, loved cooking and entertaining, loved animals, especially her Boston terriers, and always brought a sense of humor to everything she did. At age 93, she was proud and grateful to be able to stay in her home with John at the Country Club of Sarasota.
