Shaffer, Helen Charlotte of Fridley, Minnesota, was 87 when she died on Saturday, September 9, 2006. She was born on November 15, 1918, in Coulee, North Dakota to Josie E. & Thomas Leavitt. Her childhood was spent on a farm, growing up with her parents and two brothers, Kenneth & David, both now deceased. After graduating from business school she went to work for Federal Civil Service, working first in Washington, DC during WWII, then in Germany after the war. In 1948 she returned to Minnesota. She continued working with Federal Civil Service, at Fort Snelling. On December 15, 1953 she married Francis Nelson Shaffer. Helen adopted Francis' son Robert later that year. She spent the next 17 years working as a homemaker and mother. In 1973 Helen obtained an Associate of Arts Degree from Anoka Ramsey Community College. In later life she enjoyed travel, quilting, sewing and volunteering at Unity Hospital and her church. Helen is survived by her son, Robert (Jane) Shaffer; grandchildren, Andrew and Kathryn; nephews, a niece and many friends. Funeral Service 10:30 AM Friday, September. 15, 2006 at the Miller Funeral Home, 6210 NE Hwy 65, Fridley. Visitation Friday 1 hour prior to service. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Mpls.
