Helen Marie Staten, 76, of Afton, crossed over on Wed-nesday, December 31, 2008, at Martha Jefferson Hospital with her children, grandchil-dren and loving friends at her side.
She was born August 7, 1932, in Washington, D.C., to Anton-ia, a homemaker, and George Sakos, a gardener for the National Park Service. Helen herself was loyal to the United States Park Service for over 30 years.
Most notably, Helen was in charge of procuring fireworks contracts for the annual Fourth of July celebration on the mall in Washington, D.C. each year.
An avid bird watcher, knitter and proud grandmother, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, John Sakos.
She is survived by her sister, Maria Boulton. She was the proud mother of two beloved sons, George of Afton and Kevin of Poolesville, Maryland; adoring daughters-in-law, Melissa and Beth; as well as three cherished grandsons, Michael, Benjamin, and Noah.
A mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2009, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lovingston, with Father Daniel Kelly officiating, with a ceremony at the top of Afton Mountain and a wake at the Staten home to follow.
