Honaker Funeral Home, Inc. - Slidell Obituary

Helen Skinner Venezia, 92, of Slidell, Louisiana passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, in her home surrounded by her loving family after living a long, beautiful life.

Helen was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 17, 1933, to Lilly and Major Murray Skinner. She was the fifth of six children.

On May 18, 1950, Helen married John Arthur Venezia Jr. They were married for 59 years when Johnny entered Heaven's Gate. Helen and Johnny shared a love beyond measure. They truly were the beat of each other's heart.

In June of 1952, Helen became a mother when she lovingly welcomed her son John Arthur Venezia III into the world. Then in May of 1955 she was blessed with her baby girl, Micky Venezia.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, and daughter.

She is survived by her son, Johnny III and daughter in law Noel, and the little loves of her life-- The ones who made her "Granny". Grandchildren: Mindy Mitchell, Vicki Venezia Thompson, Mitzi Dowden (Brandon), Johnny Venezia IV (Jessica), Breanne Thomas (Shawn), and Jared Peyton (Kaitlyn). Great-grandchildren: Tyler Kieth (Avery), Elijah, Isabella, Johnny V, Reese, Miles, Riley-Kate, Harper, Cade, Beau, Evie, Grey, Jake, Matteo, and Emily. Great Great-grandchildren: Blaire.

Helen loved so many things in life- spending time with her family and friends, shopping, music, dancing, playing cards, water aerobics, coffee, old westerns, and Perry Mason! She was an amazing confidant and had the heart and compassion of a Saint. She was a devout Catholic who loved her Jesus and her church. She was a light in the dark, shelter in a storm, and a breath of fresh air in the life of so many people. Forever in our hearts, she will truly be missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service of Helen Skinner Venezia at Honaker Funeral Home 1751 GAUSE BLVD WEST, SLIDELL, LA on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. with a Catholic Mass to follow.

Not sure what to say?

Her love and light will burn inside of me forever. She was the best Granny in the whole world and the kind of human I’ve always inspired to be. My life won’t be the same without her, but knowing she’s dancing in front of the Lord, with my Gee, and my Momma sitting there watching, brings a special peace and comfort to my soul. Rest in peace sweet Granny. I love you beyond measure and I miss you already ❤

Helen was a dear friend for more than 65 years and neighbor. I lived next door to Helen for a little more than 20 years. A true friend. She loved dancing. She had a heart of gold. Rest in Peace Helen.

It is never easy to say goodbye to someone who felt like a permanent fixture of strength and joy in a family. Mrs. Helen Venezia—our beloved “Granny”—was truly one of a kind.
Honoring a Beautiful Soul: Mrs. Helen Venezia (“Granny”)
Today, my heart is heavy as we say goodbye to a woman I’ve been blessed to know for 17 years. Mrs. Helen Venezia, affectionately known to us all as “Granny,” was the kind of person who never changed—she was always the same loving, smart, and witty soul...

Helen was such fun! We all loved her at our water aerobics class. May she rest in Gods peace.

Getting to know Helen in water aerobics was a blessing to all who knew her. She loved her family dearly and was a kind and beautiful soul both inside and outside. I had the honor of teaching two of her grandchildren but was blessed to get to know her more at our water aerobics class.
