Not sure what to say?

I lived next door to Al, Helene and Gary on Georgia street in San Diego. Helene would take Gary and me to their diner for malts and hamburgers. Gary and l continued our friendship through school and SDSU. Found memories of dear old friends!! John Blackwood

Helene was a blessed second Mom who never forgot my birthday and knew of me before my birth (73 years ago) and who remained close to our family and to the 2 generations following. Helene always treated us to memorable meals in her home surrounded with love, warmth and family caring. We always enjoyed being with her and she loved for us to take her to Anthony’s overlooking the water and wildlife. She will be longingly missed, but has left a lifetime of loving memories. We cherish her...

While visiting San Diego during summers as a child, my sibs and I were treated to the company of Al and Helene who were friends of our father. I remember they treated us with genuine warmth, included us in their conversations, and made us laugh with their humor. Wonderful people.

Our sincere sympathy to Helene's family, we have enjoyed caring for this delightful woman since 2003. Jeanne Murray & Staff (La Mesa)

My special thanks to Ray Hershman for putting into words all the bits and pieces that we were able to gather about Helene's interesting life for this obituary.

When I came to San Diego in 1960 with my friends from Rockford; Sylvia, Jacci, and Marlene (Rusty), we found our second home at the Beachcomber. I remember having a cool one when Al told me, "Why don't you go home and clean your house?" I was pretty shocked, but the "regulars" assured me that it was OK "because he likes...

Helene and Al were wonderful people. the beachcomber was everyones club house in the early sixty,s. George Elam, Royal and the Fox used the Comber as their business office and you could always find a friend willing to share a 25cent beer with you. It was a different time and Helene and Al were people to be remembered forever.

MY CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILY OF HELENE . I GREW UP WITH GARY AND AS YOUNG KIDS . AL USED TO TAKE US DOWN TO THE DINER FREQUENTLY FOR HIS SPECIAL BIG BURGER, FRIES AND STRAWBERRY MALT.......GARY AND I CONTINUED OUR FRIENDSHIP THRU COLLEGE AT SDSU. I REMEMBER HELENE WAS ALWAYS SO GRACIOUS AND A GREAT FRIEND TO WE KIDS. I HAVE A LOT OF FUN TIMES GROWING UP WITH THE LEONARD FAMILY AND I'LL CHERISH THOSE MEMORIES FOREVER.

In 1963, l964 Helene served free coffee and donuts in the Beachcomber in the morning. I recall leaving my baby asleep in the carriage outside beside other sleeping babies.. Helene would chat with the young mothers and even advise on sewing problems. Great times with the Leonards at the Beachcomber. Judy Brannigan
