Whitinsville ... Helenora "Nora" (Slater) Carr, 83, of 46 Hill Street, died Sunday, December 5, in the Saint Camillus Health Center. Her husband, Douglas S. Carr, died in 2001.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas S. Carr, Jr., and his wife, Jo-Anne; and Bruce M. Carr, of Whitinsville; two daughters, Judith A. Meichelbeck, and her husband, Joseph R., of Grafton; and Jeannie L. Katz, and her husband, Donald B., of Sutton. Nine grandchildren, Heather Carr Reiter, Ian D. Carr, Dr. Bonnie Carr, Meagan Carr Washington, Christina K. Connolly, Andrew T. Kelley, David M. Kelley, Rachel A. Katz, and Aaron S. Katz; and seven greatgrandchildren, Andrew, Keith, Maggie, Benjamin, Shane, Finn, and Kailyn.

Mrs. Carr was born, November 30, 1921, in Kinghorn, Fifeshire, Scotland, daughter of John and Anniebella (Townend) Slater. Her stepfather was the late Richard Lemay. She moved to Whitinsville in 1923, and graduated from Northbridge High School in 1939. During World War II, she worked at the Whitin Machine Works, and was on the staff of "News From Home", a local newspaper which was sent to all servicemen and women from Northbridge for the duration of the war. She was a member of the Village Congregational Church, in Whitinsville, for more than 50 years. She was the founder and first president of the Northbridge Historical Society; she belonged to Lady Gordon Lodge, Daughters of Scotia, and she was a charter member of the former Ladies' Guild at Saint Camillus Hospital, Whitinsville.

An accomplished piano player, she often played at church and at nursing homes. During the 1920's and 1930's, she was well-known as a dancer in musicals and talent shows throughout the Blackstone Valley.

Her funeral service will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, December 9, in the Village Congregational Church, 25 Church Street. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling Hours will be from 4-7 PM, Wednesday, December 8, in the Carr Funeral Home, 24 Hill Street, Whitinsville (www.carrfuneralhome.com).
