Helmut Alfred Nickel

I grew up in Essen West Germany and came to know Helmut Nickel's work reading comics. He was an extraordinary artist, who loved creating and illustrating comic books based on famous adventure stories. It took some time until his great art was recognized in Germany. In the last decade of his life Helmut Nickel was venerated in Germany for his work. We are very sorry to lose him and send our sincere condolences across the Atlantic. My condolences to family and the global circle of friends! I mourn too. I worked with Helmut in 1969-70 at the MMA, just a curious secretary whom he treated as a colleague. Long after I called upon him time and again, on myriad topics, when working on my PHD dissertation: pithy and fun facts would flow that were formidably authoritative in endnotes (credited, of course). Working with Helmut and Hilde was always an great experience. Their dedication and support of the museum was exemplary. They were one in a million!
