Dr. Henry King Stanford, president of the University of Miami in the 1960s and '70s, died New Year's Day in Americus, Ga. Stanford, who was in his early 90s, retired to Americus after his career in academia ended. He was president of UM from 1962 to 1981.

As a student at Birmingham-Southern during Dr. Stanford's time there, which corresponded to a difficult time for the city and state, I saw first hand how his firmness, grace, and good humor set exactly the tone that was needed. He was a rare combination of personal and professional quality.

I am only now learning of the death of Dr. Stanford, who I counted as a friend and mentor even though I was also a contemporary and friend of his son Peyton. I send my condolences to all members of the family. Dr. Stanford was a great and inspiring leader, and many seem to forget the tremendous progress of UM under his stewardship. When Dr. Stanford became President of Birmingham-Southern in the late 1950's, fear gripped the city. To question the existing order could mean a cross burning in your yard or worse. Some in the community including some Methodists accused Birmingham-Southern of being a communist college and many parents would not allow their children to attend the school.
