Loved having Mr Beerman as my first year drawing instructor. His jokes were not for everyone but if you were clever enough to understand the underlying meaning(s) you realized that he was not only smart and skilled in his creativity but extremely funny too. Sorry that he is gone. He made a lot of us better people!

I have just become aware of the passing of Herbert Beerman. Mr. Beerman was my 2-D professor in Foundation Studies at Pratt 1966-67. I had many professors at Pratt, and I can name them all, but the professor who meant the most to me then and now is Mr. Beerman. At the time we all knew that we were experiencing something special in his class. I believe I can still remember every assignment and critique, where I was sitting, what was said, what the weather was like that day, everything....

Many years later, I remember being Mr. Beerman's student, Foundation Year at Pratt, 1962. Before teaching us how to make art, he taught us, more importantly, how to THINK, both critically and creatively.
At the time he was quite a challenge to fully understand, but there is no doubt that experiencing his instruction was life-changing, and for the better.
