A friend convinced Dr. Bogart to conduct a seminar (for credit!) on Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, which we held in our off-campus apartment. He gamely made the seminar interesting with his anecdotes about the writers, although I'm not sure he was as fascinated by the Beat writers as we were at the time (aged 18 or 19.). He was an outstanding professor. I see now that he was the one who brought Patti Smith to K College, providing a mind-blowing experience.

I was a mediocre English student at K College in the early 70's. Herb and I were friendly and I cleaned house for him and did other odd jobs. I'll never forget when he included me in a dinner at his house with Gary Snyder, the writer. I also greatly appreciated the poetry reading that were provided for us, including Patty Smith. Have been wondering about Herb for years. May his memory be a blessing.

I was a student of Dr. Bogart from 1965 until I graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1969. I was from a small Midwestern town (Oberlin, Ohio), and Dr. Bogart changed my life. I was fascinated by his rich interpretations of especially American literature and his wonderfully personal teaching style. If Dorothy were able she would want the family to know how much she thought of Dr. Bogart. As the secretary/administration asst. at K College in the English Dept. She mentioned her joy at working there with "Herb" and the other profs. He was one of the favorites.
