Engel, DDS, Herbert Louis Herbert was a loving husband, proud father, adoring grandfather and accomplished professor. He was born into Eternal Life on July 30 at the age of 94. Herb was born on January 21, 1923 to Herbert and Leona Engel. A graduate of South Division High School, he continued to support the school as a member of their Old Timers Association for years to come. He went on to attend Marquette University, and graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1945. Herb practiced dentistry in Wauwatosa and taught at Marquette University for more than 40 years, where he retired as Professor Emeritus of Removable Prosthodontics. Herb was a standout athlete, most notably playing football and basketball. He was a member of the Marquette University basketball team from 1944-45, and at the time of his death, their oldest living player. He was a member of Marquette's M Club; Phi Chi Psi, Psi Omega and Omicron Kappa Upsilon Fraternities; past president of the Marquette Tip-Off Club; Associate Fellow of the Academy of Denture Prosthetics; Fellow of the International College of Dentistry; 1992 MU Distinguished Alumnus in Dentistry. A veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Herb served his country as a US Naval Reserves commander in the dental corps, and often shared stories of time served in Japan. But his life truly changed when he married the love of his life, Margaret Brady, in 1949. Throughout their 60 years of marriage, they served God, family and community as a couple who put others first. They were a living example of "the greatest generation." Herb loved sports, especially rooting on his beloved Marquette Warriors, Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers. But watching his children and grandchildren play sports brought his greatest joy. Herb is preceded in death by his parents; wife Margaret (nee Brady); brother Gerald Engel, sisters Nancy Miller and Carol Tschida, sisters-in-law Mary Mooney, Jane Jones and Marcy Brady, brothers-in-law Thomas Mooney, Art Miller, Bud Jones, Glenn Tschida and James Brady. He is lovingly survived by sons Dennis (Ellen), Doug (Connie) and David (Laura); grandchildren Christopher, Nicholas, Alyssa and Zachary Engel; sister-in-law Joyce Engel; nieces, nephews and friends. Sincere thanks to the staff of Harwood Place and Vitas Healthcare for their wonderful care and compassion extended to Herb. You touched his heart and ours. Please join us for a celebration of Herb's life at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 8th from 4 to 7 PM.
