Not sure what to say?

Just found this. Herbert Gintis was my calculus teacher at Penn in 1961. Before the final, he said there would be four questions, and the first would be "State and prove the theorem of Riemann sums." Since this theorem is so fundamental to just about everything and, though complicated to prove, is breathtaking in the simplicity and beauty of its result, this was a brilliant way of making sure we all understood this marvelous achievement.

i would have loved to drink a cup of tea with you.

Brilliant, funny, an independent thinker, and, most importantly, a very nice person. I haven't seen him in years, but I miss him nonetheless.

Hi Marci, Arthur Reber here. Herb and I were friends back in Lower Merion High and again at Penn. I just heard about his death and, well, it saddened me. I understand he wasn't well recently. I do hope you're fine and, perhaps, remember me....

A brilliant man, always curious about new ideas and new fields of study. He was the most inspiring professor at UMass Amherst in the 1970s.

Sending love to Marci. You and Herb were so much a part of our Cambridge life so many years ago.

I was very sad to hear of Herb´s passing. Although I haven´t seen Herb for many many years, he has always been a bright light in my mind. I took classes from Herb and Sam at UMass in the mid-seventies. Herb was brilliant, iconoclastic and funny. He was always willing to put his ideas on the table and invite any objections. And he was always more than willing to listen to and respond to other points of view. I´m sure Herb has inspired many besides me.

Incredibly smart, funny, sharp, generous, ...admirable. I enjoyed every minute of his class and speeches. A great loss. My sincere condolences to his wife and son.

I met him once, at a Marxism conference at Amherst, never knew him well but his work with Sam Bowles was an inspiration to me as a lefty philosophy student in the 70s. So sad to see this, we still need him.
