Herbert PaulMcLaughlin, Jr.

San Francisco architect Herb McLaughlin couldn't bear to wear a suit, preferring the decades-old sweaters he'd gone to Yale in, despite the holes in their elbows. A born contrarian, McLaughlin initially trod the path expected of a well-born Chicago native,...

Not sure what to say?

I was fortunate enough to deliver 5 years worth of Herb-a-grams. The people I met, the experiences afforded me and the life long love of San Francisco is directly related to Herb and KMD....Herb, keep dancing.

Fond memories of Herb-o-grams left on my desk; those bat-bite sketches....that rapid clicking of the mechanical pencil, tip of tongue sticking out. Cheers to a life well lived...the office wasn't the same without you.

An amazing person who helped me with several projects without discussing money first. He was warm and welcoming and openly shared his office and staff. I am saddened by his death as I am sure many are.

Farewell and salute to an unequivocal one-off, one of a kind. Herbert's countless and urgent voyages around the Horn of creative pursuit-the long way-to challenge one's wits, creativity-and patience. John Sutton Photography Herb McLaughlin took a chance on John right out of school. After hitting up seven of the biggest architectural firms in San Francisco, John, armed once again with his student portfolio, called on Kaplan McLaughlin Diaz. Very sorry to hear of Herb's passing, may he rest in peace with the perpetual light shining upon him.

An important figure in my life and a fine brother in law. Thank you Herb.

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever.

Great memories of Herb. He meant so much to Marianne and me during our early years in San Francisco. Generous. A valued mentor. When I joined in the 80's we found KMD was a thrilling place to work with a culture that extended beyond the normal business day and influenced us as Architects as well as in our personal life. We hold that time we spent at KMD to be among the best of our professional years.
