Herbert Peters Obituary

PETERS, HERBERT G.; age 95; a life-long resident of Rochester; died April 24, 2011. He was born in Rochester on December 19, 1915, to the late Louis and Florence (Garrett) Peters. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1932, received his Bachelors Degree from Alma College and his Masters Degree from Wayne State University. After serving his country during World War II as a 1st Lt., he taught in the Rochester Community Schools , serving at Rochester High School and then West Middle School until his retirement in 1981 after 32 years of service. He was a man gifted with so many interests and talents who loved to share with them with people. Besides teaching he worked as a sports reporter for the Detroit newspapers, the Oakland Press and the Rochester Clarion. His family came to Rochester in the 1840's and he was fascinated with its history, eventually leading him to become A Son of the American Revolution. He also was a member of the National Education Association and the Rochester Elks #2225. On June 6, 1946, he married Madeleine A. Vignier in France, her native land; they were able to spend over sixty-four years together. Besides his wife, he was the father of Gigi (Thomas) Williams of Shelby Twp., Jacqueline (Ross) Baker of Fairfield Glade, TN and Congressman Gary (Coleen) Peters of Bloomfield Twp; also surviving are his eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Louise Hughes. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 10 a.m. at PIXLEY FUNERAL HOME, 322 W. University Drive in Rochester, followed by burial with Military Honors at VanHoosen Jones-Stoney Creek Cemetery. Because of his on-going interest in anything that had to do with the history of Rochester, the family would greatly prefer that memorial contributions in his name be directed to Rochester-Avon Historical Society, P.O. Box 80783, Rochester, MI 48308-0783.

To the Peters family,
Please accept my sympathy on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Peters was my 7th grade English teacher at the old school on University. I graduated in 1959 from the new RHS. I remember the long hallway in the old school that ran north and south and ended on the north end with the studyhall. His room was on the west side of that hallway not far from the studyhall. Almost across from Mr. McGowan's social studies room. He was a just and fair teacher.

Dear Gary

I've known your father since 1957. He was my seventh grade English and social studies teacher at Rochester Junior High. He first was a teacher and then a mentor who shared his love of sport and education with me. As I went through high school, he was a fixture on the scoring table at basketball games in which I played. I went to college at Adrian and became a teacher who also came back to work in the Rochester Community Schools. Throughout my coaching career, Herb was either scoring my games or taking reports for the local papers. He became my friend. Your father was a primary influence on my life and I still think of him often. I remember a problem he gave to us in his seventh grade classroom, “How do you write, ‘There are three two's in the English language correctly.' As you can see, I still don't know how. And, he never shared the answer with me. He will be missed. I am so sorry for your loss. He was a great man.
