My uncle Dave Slagle was a dear friend of Berts when they were in college together at WSU. I worked at Ritter Drug at Division and Wellesley in l967 for six months while I was with the naval reserve in Spokane before I went to Vietnam. Bert wrote to me while I was in Vietnam. I appreciated his friendship very much. My sympathy to the Ritter family.

Bert was more like my Mother's brother than her cousin. He was always her biggest supporter and remained lovingly loyal their whole lives. While growing up, our summer vacations to Spokane meant spending time with Grandma ("Aunt Eddie"), "working" at Ritter Drug, going to dinner with Aunt Marguerite at The Shack, and getting to go to Hayden Lake. Jim and I are very sorry the extreme weather prevented us from driving over. I have fond memories of the big box of Chocolates he brought every Christmas. My first job at Ritter's Drug Store, rides in the MG and lots of fun in the sun at Hayden Lake in the old Garwood. I will always remember the great summers we had out at the cabin in Couer D'Alene and Bert's tremendous stories he would share with us as kids. He was a great man and has a great family that was more than welcoming to the Deeks' clan every summer.

My dad was an amazing and wonderful man. He really enjoyed meeting everyone and sharing their experiences. When you were with my dad - you knew he cared about you and was so happy to be with you. Thank you to everyone who has been in his life as I have been so blessed to know you as well. I know his spirit, wisdom and fun he has shared over his 86 years will live on in the hearts, minds and actions of all of us he loved and cherished. Life is short ... Eat dessert first.
