RODGERS, Herbert William - Of Flint, age 74, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2007 at Hurley Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 11AM Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Raymond L. Cocke officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park with a military graveside service under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard. Visitation 11AM-3PM and 4-8PM Friday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be conducted by the Flushing Lodge #223 F.&A.M. at 7:30PM Friday at the funeral home. Herbert was born in Mayfield, Kentucky on February 25, 1933, the son of Tommy and Bernie (Wicks) Rodgers. On December 21, 1953 he married Mava Rogers in Mississippi. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army. Mr. Rodgers was employed by the old Chevrolet Manufacturing Plant in the mid 50s and soon became a Union Representative for his co-workers and did this for most of his career. He was a very effective negotiator and represented his group extremely well until his retirement in 1986 and was a member of UAW Local #659. He was a member of the Flushing Lodge #223 F.&A.M. Mr. Rodgers loved his wife of 53 years, Mava (Joyce); his daughter, Sandy, who passed away recently and his very close knit family and many friends. He loved fishing, enjoyed the beauty of nature and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed horse racing and baseball games. Surviving are sister, Ozell Stinson; sisters-in-law, Lela Pearl Rodgers of Kentucky, Wanda Rea and special friend, Joe Cook; brother-in-law, Jerry and wife Casey Rogers; nieces, Cathy and husband Mike Millmine and Debbie Shufelt; nephews, Steve Rea, Johnny and wife Karen Rogers, Rodney and wife Katia Rogers; great-nieces and nephews, Tara, Kyla, Heather, Jason and Wade, Brent and many other special nieces and nephews from out of state; special cousins, Alton, Rosemary and Donald Rogers. A special thanks to all the wonderful people on the CCU at Hurley Medical Center. He was preceded in death by daughter, Sandra (Sandy) Rodgers; parents, Tommy and Bernie Rodgers; father and mother-in-law, Vernon and Ella Rogers; brother-in-law, Athel Rea; brother-in-law, Johnny and sister-in-law, Judy Rogers; also uncles, aunts and cousins from out of state. Herb, I was at the funeral home the day they took you out, I had wanted to come say hi but they had said you weren't feeling well so I was afraid to approach you, how now I wish I had. Last Thursday, June 7th, Chuck and I had to have our dog, Cheyanne, put to sleep. My heart was broken days before we had to do it, and my heart continues to be broken today. Aunt Joyce you are probably one of the strongest people I know to have gone through all the losses you've had and still be kind,loving person you have always been.Caring for those around you. I know your heart is broken and will never the same, but you have no regrets because you have always did everything you could for others and put them before yourself.I don't know to many people that could do that and survive what you have been through and still be concerned and caring for others around...

Herb, was a fantastic brother in law and will be missed by his many friends and relatives. He was a strong man who made a difference in the lives of many. My sister Joyce was Married to him for over 53 years and he was an excellent husband to her and a great father to their wonderful precious daughter Sandra Jean who also passed away this year. He was more like a big brother to me for the 53 plus years I knew Herb. I have wonderful memories of this man over the years from the special times...

To my Uncle "Dad", Uncle Herb, You helped raise me, now you are in Heaven to watch over me. Thank-You for all the wonderful things you did for me. Aunt"Mom" Joyce,Our Tower of Streignth,You helped us get through so much pain while your heart was breaking. We all love you so much.Please Keep us all going as we go through the rest of our lives, You have us(Kathy, Paul,Cathy and Fam.,Theresa) as "your" kids Thank-you for everything. Im so sorry for your loss I cant imagine all the changes you are going to go through, but know Herb and Sandy will be watching over you and making sure you will be ok!
