Not sure what to say?

We didn't know Herb well, but we know how much he meant to Shirley. We're really sorry he is gone, but glad Shirley had a long time with him.

How sad the news that Herb Scott has died. I remember his great pride and boundless energies connected to New Issues Press. He came to Milford ten years ago to launch books and we'd a lovely dinner after a fine, fine reading. And before that there was all the work he did with Michael Delp and Con Hilberry to put together the Third Coast Anthology. Herb was a gift to poets and his poems were gifts. "It is the dead" he wrote "who are always with us,/handsome and winning, on their best...

Herb was a wonderful poet, teacher, editor and friend. He was kind to poets. He used to hire destitute graduate students (like me and my husband, once apon a time) to work for him, probably more out of compassion than need. He paid many of us more than we deserved an hour to rake, move furniture, build things, edit, etc. and helped keep us from starving. His classes were good and lively and he had a shrewd critical eye. Dozens of Michigan and national writers were given their first real...

Herb taught a poetry seminar class (666) that I and about 8 others took in the 1980s. Herb even gave all of us a red t-shirt that had ENGL 666 on the front and "words are everything else in the world" on the back. We sat around a table in a Brown Hall room, critiquing each other's poetry one night a week. Someone always brought a bottle of wine. I was a terrible poet--but through Herb's nudging me along and the tactful feedback of my classmates, turned out some ok poems. Herb was very...

Herb was a fine poet as well as a thoughtful and generous editor, friend and mentor. My warmest regards to his family and family of friends in poetry. He will be sorely missed.

Herb was a fine, fine poet, and some of his late stuff is even better than the earlier; he was a wonderful friend; and he was one of the all-time great editors, not only line by line, but in the creation of New Issues, a poetry press totally committed to real value. I felt a special bond with him because we were both treated for cancer, only Herb didn't make it. What a life, what a loss, what an inspiration to keep on with the work that mattered so much to him.

What a wonderful contribution Herb has made to the rest of us during his life! My prayers go out to Shirley and their family. I'm sure he will be missed greatly!!

My deepest sympathies to the Scott family. Herb was a fine person, teacher, and poet. A role model for many younger writers. His generosity and kindness to so many of us will be dearly missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with Shirley and the rest of the family. My memories of Herb include his gentle nature and wonderful smile.

Sincerely,
