Mr Thompson, as we referred to him, was my first boss at ICRISAT, Hyderabad, India. A broadminded and cheerful person, he was very knowledgeable and a fantastic leader. He kept in touch with my husband Vijay and me till recently, with his yearly letters, which we warmly reciprocated. I am fortunate to have begun my career with him as my boss. We will miss him.

Herb got me to Hyderabad as an editor in ICRISAT Information Services in 1982. Once there I spent 23 happy years in India, but the first ones working with Herb, as he taught me more about editing than I could ever have learned elsewhere were certainly the best.
I owe him a lot and will never forget the times we shared.
My thoughts are with Gloria and the family I met when they visited.

Dear Mr. Thalman, thank you for the opportunity to leave a message in Herb's (my Poppi) guest book. I am his granddaughter, and it meant so much to read about his life and the legacy he leaves behind. I agree with you wholeheartly about his exceptional person and life. It was love that brought him here, and it is love that sends him home.
Sincerly, Kira Marburger

Herb was my boss and mentor during a stint as a reporter in the Associated Press Annapolis Bureau. It is impossible to envision a better journalist and person. Herb's good judgment, exceptional perspecitve and sense of humor will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gloria and his children.
