Herman A. Vanderkamp

Mr. Vanderkamp was my professor at San Francisco State in the early 70's. He was a remarkable human being and incredible piano instructor. He lived a life of wisdom and peace and shared it generously with his students. His wonderful energy is missed.

Nearing the anniversary of Herman Vanderkamp's passing, 14 years ago, I still deeply miss this extraordinary artist, this kind gentleman whose encouragement and guidance will never be forgotten.

Hermann was my piano teacher at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and when I graduated I also studied with him at San Francisco State as a graduate student as he left the Conservatory and went to SFSC. I am so sorry I never got to tell him how much he meant to me. He not only taught me piano but how to get through life. I'm just now learning of his death and very sad and sorry. Mr. Vanderkamp was my piano professor at San Francisco State University, in the early 1970's. He was the best influence on my playing I ever could have wished for. He taught me how to eliminate muscle tension at the keyboard and taught me so well how to study and practice a piece of music, that in all my years since as an amateur musician, I have never needed a teacher to shepherd me through my music.
