Booton Herndon III
Booton Herndon III, known to many as Jack, died in his sleep on Saturday, August 28, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in New Orleans, on November 9, 1942, the son of Booton Herndon II and the former Jane Donnelly, and moved to Charlottesville when he was three. After his mother's death in 1948, his father remarried and he was raised by Boo and Bonnie Herndon in Charlottesville.
After his service in the military, he settled in Miami, Florida. He worked for Giffen Roofing until he left there in the 80's to start his own company, Herndon Powell Roofing. While with Giffen, he taught the Apprenticeship program through the Dade County School Board. Later he worked for Andrews Roofing and for Dale Scarborough in managerial roles.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherry and her husband, Gary Swink, and their children, Jamie, Jeremy and Jessie; daughter, Donna and her children, Danielle Crenshaw and Jack Kemp; son, Booton Herndon IV and his wife, Jane, and their daughter Brittany; step-daughter Jennifer and her husband, Fritz Nott, and their son, Chay; step-son, Michael Chester and his children, Michael and Alona Chester; his brother, John; his sister, Sue; and five nieces and nephews.
His grandson, Grant Kemp predeceased him.
When Jack returned to Virginia in 2000, he immersed himself in NA, devoting himself to his multiple roles in that community in both Charlottesville and the Northern Neck. The family would like to express our gratitude to all his friends in that extended family who supported him and gave his life such meaning.
A memorial service is being planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society would be most appreciated.
