Herschel Thornburg

My family has one of Herschel's works. He gave a sermon at my great-grandfather's church, and the painting has been passed through our family since then.

As a child, I loved his musical performances, his beautiful chalk art, and his magical tricks. I was never so amazed by anyone else in my life. It seemed like this man could do anything he set his mind to and yet he seemed very humble, loving, and kind. I am blessed to have known him.

I loved listening to him while he did his chalk drawings as a child. I even had one of 'stairway to Heaven' I 'won' when my dad came to his service - the only time my dad was ever in church. My mom hung it on the wall in the living room. The day the wind tore it I cried. It was at one of his meetings at Sherwood Friends Church when I gave my heart to the Lord and never looked back.

My mother used to take my brother and me to hear Herschel at the Friends Church in Marion, Oregon in the late 1950s and early 60s. Thoroughly enjoyed his black light chalk talks and music. He was definitely an asset to humanity.
