Andrews Mortuary and Crematory - Market Street Chapel - Wilmington Obituary

Hilda Greene King, age 75, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, after courageously battling cancer for 2 months.  She spent her final days with a front-row view of the ocean and surrounded by her family and friends.  She was born in Morganton, NC on January 17, 1949.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Robey Davis and Betty Jean Greene of Morganton, NC.  She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William F. King, and their children, Jennifer King Coleman and her husband, Edward, and Tate King Stephens, and her husband, Hamp.  She was a beloved grandmother to Ward Coleman and his wife, Mackenzie, Frances Coleman, Sarah Stephens, and Trey Stephens.  She was the eldest of four and is survived by her siblings, Danny Greene and his wife, Sheila; Beth Greene Riddle and her husband, Iverson; and David Greene and his wife, Lisa; and nephews, Shane Greene, Will Riddle, JD Riddle, and Davis Greene, and nieces, Terra Greene and Emma Greene.  In addition to her family, there are beloved in-laws, including Tommy and Ann King and Beth King Thompson (the late Rocke Thompson), and countless close family members.

Hilda’s life can be described very simply.  She cared about everyone she met, and they cared about her. She was a rare and beautiful soul inside and out who lived for family and friends.  Whether it was the church choir, her tennis group, her island friends, her children and grandchildren’s friends, or anyone she met in passing, she shared a warm, beautiful, and youthful presence.  Cooking was a lifelong love of hers.  She loved preparing and serving family meals and always cooked everyone’s favorite dish.  Hilda was an unbelievable mom to her two daughters and loved her four grandchildren more than anything.  Her passion was to serve her family.  There was no question to them how cherished they were.  Never idle and always with a task in mind, she still balanced that with the fun activities of life, like dancing the night away.  She was also the bravest person her family has ever known.  She never complained about the hand she was dealt.  It was hard, but she was courageous to the end.  She was one-of-a-kind.

The funeral will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC.  A reception will immediately follow in Gilmour Hall.  A private family burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.  The family would like to thank friends and family for their love and support over the past two months.  Memorial contributions may be made to the King Trust Fund at First Presbyterian Church or Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Not sure what to say?

Billy, you were an important part of the Board of Directors of The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame and the current Board has asked me to send their condolences. I'll focus on the positive by saying that those of us who have known you personally know how fortunate you are to have been able to share your life with Hilda. I didn't have the good fortune of getting to know her well, but from talking with her close friends and family at her funeral and reception I know that she was a...

Hilda and I were friends for many years through our membership in the Chancel Choir. We sang next to each other and enjoyed the musical challenges. She had a wonderful sense of humor; we had many "undercover laughs" while participating. I will very much miss her. Glo

I first met Hilda at Peace College , where we spent 2 years together . I was delighted she married Billy and lived in Wilmington . We most recently spent time in garden club together . She was beautiful inside and out and a bright light in this world . My heart and prayers are with you all. Jane Rippy

Hilda was a rare and precious gift to countless individuals and absolutely treasured by her family. She had the aura of a movie star and you could not escape a wonderful feeling when you were in her presence. Whether you were in her circle daily or lived afar, so many looked up to her which speaks volumes about the remarkable woman that she was and the void that will be deeply felt.

Sending condolences and love to all. Hilda will be missed.

There is another bright star in the heavens.

Billy - Tommy called to tell me about Hilda's death. Earlier that same day, your sister Beth had texted my sister, Beth, to let her know as well. The Kings are such a part of our common family heritage. We feel a personal loss.

I am in Charlotte and will be in Asheville this weekend; thus, I will be unable to come to Wilmington for Hilda's memorial service on Saturday.

Grace to all and peace. Ed Peacock

I remember Hilda as a beautiful and loving lady. My deepest sympathy for Billy, Jennifer and Tate. Loved by all who knew her.

Our deepest sympathy to you Billy, Jennifer, Tate and families. Hilda was a remarkable and lovely lady and will never be forgotten. We were blessed to have known her. May God give you strength, comfort and peace as you heal.
