Barb,
I have been waiting to post, until the right words came. There just aren't any. It is hard to put into words what Hilsia meant to our family. Although she was Amy's friend. I feel very blessed to count her as mine too. She was a special person and will truely be missed. Our sympathy and love to you.

Dear Barbara and Family-
Just wanted you to know how special Hilsia was to me over the years. She was a great friend to my whole fraternity at Sac State but even a better friend to me in my after school years. It seemed that no matter what I was going thru or what I was doing with my life, Hils was always there for me as a friend or simply someone to share laughs with and comfort me when I needed it. I will miss her terribly and I only hope she is in a wonderful spot now. ---All my love --Noah

Dear Souza family-
I was in the Greek system at Sac St. with Hilsia, "Little Hils" as we adoringly called her. She was just an awsome person to be around, especially with her bright smile. She was always there to keep us in line! She will be missed, but we know she is smiling down on us now.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you-The Brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The loss of any child is a life-shattering event but the loss of an only child adds a different dimension to a parent's grief. For Hilsia, we ask God to grant her eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon her. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mrs. Souza.

Hilsia was my first friend and soon became my best friend at Cordova Meadows Elementary. We were both the "new girls" and quickly bonded as we had curly hair, names no one could pronounce :) and the affinity for giggling. I felt like I belonged with her.... She had a way of making you feel special that is soo rare. Although we grew and made new friends, we always had a shared bond. I watched her excel in school, track and swimming and always admired her for that. I transferred to a different high school but Hilsia still came to my graduation, because that was the kind of woman she was. A huge heart, intelligent, beautiful, caring and strong. You will never be forgotten sweetheart........
Ms. Souza, thank you for raising such a beautiful and loving woman. She will never leave you. God Bless You and your family at this time.

Though we did not keep in close contact after attending Jr High and High School, I can reflect on the many smiles and laughs shared growing up---those beautiful eyes and wildly curly hair, loved it! May Hilsia now rest in peace free of suffering as her wonderful soul deserves. Condolences, thoughts and prayers to her loved ones--may you be strengthened by her spirit in this difficult time. God Bless.

I thought I would share a high school graduation present that Hils gave to Steve, Colin and I back in 1990. It is a poem Hils wrote and framed for each of us.
In `89 all dressed in red,
I strolled down the field with thoughts in my head,
Thoughts of happiness, sadness and fear,
I knew I’d miss the “gang” for a year.
Now it’s come, your day in the sun,
To follow the “Big Red” tradition.
The call of `90 is your year,
A day for which you’ve been wishin’.
And through the years as time has passed,
A friendship has grown which continues to last.
A friendship full of good times and bad,
Never forgetting the times we’ve had.
But within time there will be
A change of directions for you and me.
So look into the future and hold your head up high,
I will be with you in spirit, always by your side.
And there will be a time when we must finally die,
Drifting through the clouds to the gateway in the sky.
Once again we’ll meet, but this time to forever last.
All of us together as we once were in the past.
I love you guys!
Always,
Hilsia

My heart goes out to those who are near and dear to Hilsia during this difficult time. It's sad to have lost such an amazing woman. As many have repeated, she is definitely among the Angels above keeping watch over us all. I too went to Jr High and High School with Hilsia and remember her amazing personality, beautiful smile and those beautiful blue eyes! Prayers to all she touched in her life!

I will always cherish the good times we've had over the past 25 years. You have been my closest "female friend" for pretty much my whole life which is important for a guy to have. Our adventures were vast, too many to list. I'm a better person for having known you, thank you for being a good friend. Rest in peace and know that your memory will live on in all of us for years to come.
Our last time together.

I am beyond words with sadness and grief. I remember the day she first told me she had breast cancer. I broke out in tears. She seemed a little shocked like I didn't need to worry. Her will to live and strength was like no other. I really can't think of a time that she complained. Things were more matter of fact and time to take care and forge ahead. I have not seen such perserverance in my life. Ever. Her trip to visit us in Austin last summer was great. A time for her to take a mini vacation and get away from it all. I will treasure this time and our last time in SF in March. Even then as bad as she was feeling, she wanted everyone happy and together. I aspire to be this strong. My words to best describe her after knowing her 20 years: Dedicated. Strong. Beautiful. Grounded. Honest. Caring. Reliable. Hard working. Selfless. Respectful. Artistic. Devoted. Courageous. Silly. Funny. Supportive. Most of all...one of the best friends I will ever have. I am blessed to have had her in my life. She'll be in my heart forever.
May we all find peace at this time.
My prayers go out to her mom and dad and all of us who have to now go through our lives without her.
Forever in our hearts Hilly. We love you.
Shelly

My heart goes out to Hilsia's family and friends. May you find comfort and peace in your memories. I went to school with Hilsia. She was by far the sweetest girl at Mills. I will always remember her beautiful smile and warm heart. May she rest in peace with the rest of our angels that watch over us.

Dear Barbara
I only met Hilsia once or twice at our club. It was clear that she was of Souza stock. Strong, resilient, stoic, brave. Hilsia called upon these strengths in her fight against cancer. We can only admire her courage. I can say the same for you, Barbara. In our many conversations over tea, I witnessed tears only once. You were telling of Hilsia's sharing of real feelings at a support group meeting.
I don't know how you kept it all together, because this is life turned upsidedown. Hilsia is loved by her family and friends. She will be forever held in their memories. Barbara, you have done your very best in caring for Hilsia, you could not have done more, in loving her, caring for her and hoping for a better outcome. Please know that you too are loved by many and we will do our best to comfort and love you in this difficult time.
