Dear Alice and kids
I wrote some rememberances but guess it didn't get past the censor. I loved the old guy and as you know spent a lot of time with him over in Washington County and at the judicial conferences. A great man, judge friend and I am sure husband and father. I was there when he was sworn in as Circuit Judge. I went on the bench on July 1, 1968 so was there when Hollie became District Judge and then later Circuit Judge - that is not important except that...

I didn't always agree with my father-in-law's views on life. But when helping him log trees or rock roads I admired his work ethic, and always respected him and learned from his many stories. He will be missed, but I will think of him fondly whenever sharing "Happy Hour" at 5:00 with family and friends.

Hollie and I attended James John Grade School, Roosevelt High School and The University of Oregon. We were both members of the Theta Chi fraternity. We practiced law together for 8 years.
We never had an argument! He was a true friend and I will miss him!

I spent hundreds of hours sitting in courtroom 202 attending arraignments. I cant count the number of times the person sitting next to me would ask: Is this judge always like this? Known for being forthright, Judge Pihl was also thoughtful and fair. Through his story telling I learned a lot about Judge Pihl and about life. He was a good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Hollie Pihl along with his wife Alice were some of the founding members of a group of neighbors that helped to start work on the abandoned rail line that would become the first Rails to Trails project in Oregon The Banks-Vernonia Trail.
Hollie and Alice along with their family and friends spent countless hours helping to clear the old rail line of brush and debris to get it ready for the finishing paving project done by Oregon State Parks. When the costs of needed supplies became...

Thank you to Hollie Pihl and the Pihl family for the support of Oregon state parks and more specifically Stub Stewart State Park. We appreciate his legacy.

He was the best story teller I ever knew. He will be missed, and fondly remembered.

With Sincere Sympathy, Barbara Freerksen

I want to offer my condolences to the Pihl family. I worked with Judge Pihl as his court reporter for 14 years, starting when I was 24, and heard all of his stories and wrote them down and they shaped how I raised my children. I learned a lot from him. I still remember most of his stories, and I can still hear his voice in my head. He was a fair judge and a good man. You will always be remembered, Judge Pihl.
