Durham - Hollis L. Leland, 92, of Piscataqua Road, died May 6, 2004 at his home in Durham.

Born November 20, 1911 in Sangerville, Me., the son of Will E. and Nellie N. (Jackson) Leland, he lived in Cranford, NJ for 27 years before coming to Durham in 1970.

In 1933 he received his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maine, and in 1935 he received his MS in Physical Chemistry from the University of New Hampshire. He received his Ph. D. in Thermodynamics from Ohio State University in 1937.

Mr. Leland worked in petroleum research management for Exxon Research and Engineering Co., retiring in 1970. While living in Cranford he was a member and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church. More recently he has been a member and Steward of the Community Church of Durham.

Very active in the Durham community he was a member of the Board of Adjustments and the Conservation Commission in Durham as well as the Durham Historic Association. After retiring he enjoyed fine arts painting, wood sculpting, and cabinet making.

He was member of Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi, American Chemical Society, Society of Automotive Engineers, American Society of Lubrication Engineers, Alpha Chi Sigma, and the UNH Presidents Council.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rosamond (Emerson) Leland of Durham; 5 children, David E. Leland of San Diego, CA, Dale Eichorn of Durham, Jean Reid of Dover, Diane Newick of Dover and John E. Leland of Durham; 12 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren; 1 niece and 3 nephews.

There are no calling hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the family home at 184 Piscataqua Road, Durham.

Private burial will take place in the Durham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Rosamond Emerson Leland Endowment For the Performing Arts, C/O The UNH Foundation, Elliott Alumni Center, 9 Edgewood Road, Durham, NH 03824.
