Second Round of a Career

Often when Barry Kirschbaum was alone on his back deck in Oakwood, in Staten Island, jazz would be playing, a glass of brandy would be on the table and a cigar would be in his hand. But he could often be found there with friends. "He was in touch with friends he had from 50 years ago," said his wife, Rochelle. "He was the one who always kept the crowd together."

One of the ways that Mr. Kirschbaum, 53, kept people together was by dining out about once a week. "He knew every restaurant and what to order and who to go with," said his daughter, Lauren, 23.

Mr. Kirschbaum was the director of security for Marsh & McLennan. He was responsible, with the 20 guards who worked for him, for the security of the firm's seven floors in 1 World Trade Center. When he took the job in 1997, he had recently retired from the New York Police Department, where he spent 25 years and achieved the rank of detective. He was looking for a second career to help him put Lauren and his son, Matthew, now 24, through college.

When the Kirschbaums dropped Lauren off at college for the first time, Mr. Kirschbaum expressed regret that his daughter was leaving home. "I can't believe I have to leave my little girl," he told her. "I'm going to get an apartment right next to you."

Not sure what to say?

Barry, The day walked into yhe Manhattan South Narcotics Office as a new Detective supervisor I saw this kid with a big smile and although we only worked together for a short while you kept me smiling every day and made my job so much easier. Rest In Peace young man and keep them smiling in heaven.

Twenty years later and still I grieve your passing. God bless all those who love you. My memories of our time together all those years are indelible. You were a true big brother to me. I know how much you loved working with us in the restaurants and how much fun we had. Love you always.

We did not know Howard, but our name is Kirschbaum. We were from Pittsburgh, Pa. My husbands name is Paul Robert
Maybe we are related.

Sending our deep sympathy to your family for your loss. With each new day may God continue to give the needed comfort and help. Many still miss Barry.

Missing you more now then ever

I share the same last name as Barry. My family is from Massapequa, NY. I visited the 9/11 memorial yesterday and saw his picture and read his bio. I somehow felt connected to him. I know he looks down and watches his family and smiles.

Barry my dear firend and neighbor, many nights we'd sit on the steps have a couple of drinks and a few laughs. You always cheered me up when I was feeling down, also I miss Crazy, But lovable Eddie, I think about you both often, we'll be together again someday! Give Eddie a hug for me!
Miss You! Tony

Barry, Another year has passed since 9-11-01 Yet it seems like only yesterday when we sat on the steps at Cranford & had a few drinks together. I've got the bottle ready for when we're together again. Give Crazy Eddie & Nicky a Hug for me. Miss You! Your Friend, Tony

In memory
With Honor & Respect.
