Sincerest sympathy to Howie's family. I saw the remembrance on PBS and immediately recognized him, after 60+ years. I knew him primarily in Student Government/Student Court at Duquesne University. He was always looking out for others, even insisting on walking my roommate and me back to the dorm after a dance on evening (the "bluff" area was not the safest). I remember Howie Croft so well. He was in my high school class at Bishop McDevitt. We were both in the band for a few years. He was shy until you got to know him, and after that he was generous with his humor and eager to be a friend. It was difficult to be African American in our high school--as in our whole country in the 1950's. As I read Howie's obituary, I marveled at how much of an activist he was! Wow! What a great life! I dont know where to begin. Howard and I went to Camp Curtin Jr. High together in Harrisburg. We were always good friends. Everyone at Camp Curtin loved him, for his kindness, friendliness, compassion towards others, and above all, his fabulous smile. Its been over 60 years since Ive seen him.
