Howard Herman Karman

Howard Karman, 87, of Tempe, Arizona passed away on March 7, 2013. Howard was born on February 27, 1926 in New York City, and was raised through high school at Peekskill, New York. He enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Corps and served as an athletic instructor in World War II. Upon discharge he came to Tucson to attend the University of Arizona, from which he graduated in 1951 with a law degree. In October, 1951 he undertook the private practice of law in Tucson, and moved his practice to Casa Grande in 1954, where he maintained an office until his death. Howard had the privilege of being chosen as the first Exalted Ruler of the Casa Grande Valley Elks Lodge upon its formation in 1955, and was a member of the Casa Grande Rotary Club for many years, serving as president in 1957. Howard was elected president of the Pinal County Bar Association in 1960, and elected to the Board of Governor in 1966, where he represented Pinal County until 1972, as well as serving as Bar President for the 1971-1972 term. Howard was appointed by the Arizona Supreme Court to membership for the court's Committee on Examinations and Admissions, where he served as chairman of the committee during the final year of a seven year term. Howard was a trustee of the Arizona Bar Client Security Fund, and was chosen as a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Bar Foundation (now the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education) in 1980, and became president of the Foundation during the years of 1984 and 1985. In 1986 Howard became a member of the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association National Conference of Bar Foundations, and was elected as president of the National Conference in 1990. He also represented the State Bar of Arizona as a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association for two terms. Howard had many hobbies, among which was a love for travel, storytelling, golf, a pilot for private flying, snow skiing, scuba diving, and connoisseur of fine wine and an accomplished gourmet cook. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, with whom he carried on a forty year love affair. His loving family includes Bill, Konnie, Shirley, Tom, Kirk, Laurie, Karen, Michele, Kathleen, Joey and Jeffrey; as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial will be Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd. in Phoenix. A reception will follow at 12:00 Noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1800 East Libra Drive, Tempe. "To all my family and friends, a salute to life, love, health, happiness and a time to enjoy."
