When I attended the services for Howard in Seattle last week, I noticed how ubiquitous the name King was…King County, King Salmon at Pike Place Market…even King St. in Chinatown where the luncheon was held after the church service. Here is a brief description of my memories of Howard using the letters KING.

K – Knowledgeable, Kind, …Knight

Attending Uncle Howie and Aunt June's fairytale Wedding as a 6 year old, I viewed Howard as the out of town Knight in shinning armor who marries the beautiful local princess. And then years later, that was capped off when I attended the Love Boat themed reception at Marina del Rey where Howard and the vivacious Vi celebrated their marriage.

I - Ingenious, Inspirational

TV antennas, GPS's, solar paneled roof,…only complaint I heard from his first family was that he was too handy. They wanted a new dishwasher but Uncle Howie kept fixing the old Kitchen Aid.

N – Nice guy, Nice smile, Never give up

Howard was a man dedicated to his family, his work and his sport…running.

G – Great Friend, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Husband, Engineer and Sports Competitor

Not especially tall…but Howard was certainly larger than life!!!

I always remember Uncle Howard visiting Seattle with his family when I was a kid. He always had a smile for me. I remember walking down the street on King St. and watch him running down the street, putting on the miles. I think he was in his 50's at the time. I was just amazed when I had recently discovered that he made a major contribution to the GPS system, and had designed the tv antenna on the Empire State Bldg. I will miss him.

I remember when gongong and popo would pick us up from school and take us out to eat, then go to the park to play. But one of my favorite memories was when we all played pictionary on the cruise ship. Gongong was on my team and I remember he would draw the most complicated things to represent the simpleist picture. It was so funny! I love you gong gong and miss you so much <3

I remember the days @ the Gardena house when growing up.
Also the summers in Seattle and some of the trips we took in the area. I expecially remember while riding ferries and going thru the docks, Uncle Howard would be following us in his car.
I have many fond memories of Uncle Howard.

????,
There are so many things I wanted to ask you. So many things that I wanted to know about you, your life, and our history. I came to China to help me reconnect our family with our Chinese roots. It's a slow, difficult, and overwhelming process. But I promise you I will finish this. I promise I will find and connect the missing pieces. I swear to you that your life, your history, and your legacy will be carried on. You will not be forgotten.

I remember when I was young, Uncle Howard would visit us and he would bring us gifts. One time it was a deck of United Airlines playing cards. I would ask him where did you get the playing cards and he said you ask the stewardess and they would give them to you at no charge.

Uncle Howard was always visiting during childhood summers in Seattle, and it was great to see him in later years, keeping fit with a big smile, interested in all life had to bring. Last time we shared a meal with him and Aunt Vi Uncle Howard was most interested in our attic excursions into the King Chong Lung store after it had passed through many hands, and we had a good discussion. I have a college memory of him popping in unexpectedly to my San Francisco apartment during those years, not sure of how he would report to my parents! Another fond one is, while at Grandma's house, my cousins and I cracking up because this very serious grown uncle came into the kitchen and said "Mommy, can I have a glass of milk." We thought that was hilarious.

Our thoughts are with you at this time. Sending hugs and all best wishes.

Howie was an amazing man. We were so blessed to have him in our lives when he married our mom over 20 years ago. He was a wonderful grandfather to our 3 children and we have so many great memories spending time with him over the years during holidays and family events, and on the many cruises that we took with him and our mom. We loved him dearly and will miss him greatly, but look forward to the day that we will see him again in Heaven.

Love to Howie always,
Joe and Staci Severns and family

Dad was an antenna engineer and I recall his interest in my picture of the Navy ship USS California where I was assigned. He immediately got out his magnifying glass and peered intently at all the ship's antennas.

His Gardena house contained some memories. I recall his bright flourescent green bedroom (he had cataracts and didn't know how bright the color was). He built and installed his own solar hot water panels and heater. Periodically he would move his living room furniture around to get more even wear on the floor.
