An Accent on Soccer
Howard Selwyn and his wife, Ruth, talked funny because they were from England. At least that was the explanation that their two sons, who were raised on Long Island, would often give to friends when they felt the situation required an explanation. "It's very strange for two Brits to have these all- American kids," said Ruth Selwyn, Mr. Selwyn's wife, laughing.

The couple moved from London to New York in 1981, originally planning to stay for two years. Two decades later, Hewlett, N.Y., is home for Mrs. Selwyn and sons James, 19, and Alex, 10.

Mr. Selwyn's accent became more Americanized over time, but he never lost his British craze for soccer. At times he would slip and call it football. When he was not working at Maxcor/Eurobrokers, it was all soccer all the time. Weekends were devoted to coaching in his sons' league and playing goalie on an over-40 team called the Blue Baldies. He followed his favorite team, Leeds United, on cable. When he could not find a game elsewhere, he would tune into the Spanish-language channels.

Mr. Selwyn, 47, and a partner opened a soccer store in Hewlett called Soccer Central on Aug. 30.

"It was a dream fulfilled," Mrs. Selwyn said. "As a family we want to continue it for him."

Not sure what to say?

It's been 24 years now and there seems like nothing left to say except never forget. Thinking of you and praying for your family, as always.

My family and I will always remember Howard- each year, we listen for his name to be called during the New York City 9/11 memorial event. He was a wonderful person, and will forever be greatly missed.

I still remember Mr. Selwyn's sweet granddaughter announcing his name at the 9/11 memorial service, as well as doing such a spectacular job of pronouncing the names of other souls that were lost on that tragic day. It is now 8 years since she stood there so bravely. I wish the Selwyn family peace and continued condolences.
Sincerely,
Rosanne Reynolds

Dear Jsmes, Alex and Family,
Thinking of you all today and remembering Howard.
Much love,

Another year has passed. Twenty-three since this tragedy. Seven years since I watched as Mr. Selwyn's sweet granddaughter read some of the names of those that lost their lives that day. I was so struck by that sweet child and how eloquent she was at such a tender age. Her moving tribute brings me back here each year to leave a note of remembrance and prayers for the Selwyn family.

James, Alex and Family,
I will never forget - think of you often and hope that you are all well.
Howard was such a special person, and i know thzt he is ever present in your lives.
Much love to you all.

On the 22nd anniversary of this sad day, I want to again extend my condolences to the family of Howard Selwyn. I first became aware of Mr. Selwyn after his sweet granddaughter stood and mentioned his name in 2017 during the anniversary remembrance that year. I have never forgotten her and how she so eloquently mentioned the names that she was assigned, as well as her closing name "And my grandfather, Howard Selwyn". I hope that she is doing well and that Howard is looking down and protecting...

Dear Celia,
I guess since I have posted a few times on Legacy on the anniversary your grandfather's passing on 9/11, it alerted me of a new post. I am honored to still tell you how moved I was when your sister paid tribute to your grandfather. As a mother of two daughters, that tribute was so emotional for me. To see such a young girl do such a tremendous job! I hope your family is well and may your grandfather continue to protect you all.
Sincerely,
Rosanne Reynolds
