Not sure what to say?

I am so sorry to hear this news. I traveled to Europe with Howard and his brother Cliff during the Summer of 1982 after I graduated from Rice. It was a life-changing experience for me to travel so freely, and I loved the shared experience we had during that Summer.

Howard and I were med school classmates at UTMB. He was a really great guy. I´m so sorry for your loss. I wonder if he and I walked past each other without recognition. I´ve been a cancer patient treated in Ann Arbor for 3 years. Sad. I would have liked to shake his hand.

not a day goes by that i don´t think about how Dr. Shapiro provided me with the best possible mental health care. i´m a very grateful army veteran that Dr. Shapiro gave the best possible care to for nearly 15 years. mike c in toledo ohio

Howard and I were in band together at Bellaire High School and in the MOB at Rice. He was always available to drive us to practices in his well-worn, beige Gremlin! So smart, so funny, such a lovely soul. He is missed!

I just got the Owlmanac, the Rice University magazine, that announced Howard's death. Howard and I were suite mates at Lovett at Rice. We, along with Andy Ng and Bobby Jain, were able to go on vacation together to Mexico I believe twice and travel in Texas. He was great. His life as a psychiatrist at the VA was a life of service. Thank you Howard! Bob Curtin

Dr Shapiro was a wonderful doctor, and a beautiful human being. He is missed so very much.

Dear Shapiro family, I became friends with Howard during our psychiatry residency. We shared a love of design and architecture. When I lived in Michigan, we spent many weekend days looking at old houses and at new construction. I fondly recall his fascinating stories about Guatemala, about people he met, places, and from whom and how he acquired his lovely tapestries and artwork. I appreciated his passion for collecting and later for maintaining the integrity of his mid-century modern...

i was just made aware of this incredibly sad news yesterday (june 12th 2024). im a 100% service connected disabled army veteran and i was under the care of Dr. Shapiro from 2007 until sometime in late 2021 or early to mid 2022, or whenever it exactly was that he began his medical leave from the VA. I´ll never forget how he drove from ann arbor to toledo to see patients every single Tuesday! and i´ll never forget that he always returned my calls in less than a day! im glad i did let him...

Dear Shapiro family, David, Angi and John, May time heal your sorrow. I met Howard during our residency and cherished friendship with him since then. He was a good listener and always responded with thoughtful honesty. Memories of fun-time including a trip to Guatemala and his good qualities will stay in my heart.
