Our family has lost a great man. Uncle Howard was truly unique and great fun to be with. I always looked forward to going to Brownsville to visit Uncle Howard and Aunt Maxine. Even though he lived in Las Vegas for many years, he still had his true Vermonter accent. He will be missed greatly by all of us, and we know that he is reunited with his beloved Maxine. God bless both of them. Nephew Mark McGuire and family.

A true gentle man and great friend for decades, he was a surrogate grandfather to our children, conveyor of wisdom on nearly any topic and rock solid in his compassion and support. A rare spirit that was always about the other guy. Heaven is a richer place with his presence and the world less so with his loss.

I will so miss Howards' travelogues. I never met a man so happy to share his life experiences with you. I will always remember our "Damn Dam" trips and the stories he shared of mischief he got into in younger days. I feel so fortunate that he and Maxine opened their home and hearts to me and my family - and made us part of their family. They will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered.

I have fond memories of Uncle Howard and Aunt Maxine. We had fun visiting in their home and playing with their children (our cousins). Smith family gatherings were always made more fun with the with Uncle Howard's sense of humor and adventures. A great tribute to the kind of person he was is the legacy of his three wonderful children. We love you Nancy, Brenda, and Greg and our thoughts are with you. Niece Beverly Warren (Templeton, MA)

Uncle Howard sure was a great influence in all our lives. He sure had that great Smith work ethic which we all admired. He was always witty and would make you laugh. I will always remember him with his corn cob pipe smiling. He was one of a kind. He will be missed by all.
