Howell H. Howard, 85, of Barrington, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 27, 1927 to Howell H. and Loretta Hines Howard in Dayton, Ohio. Howell and his family moved to New York City when he was a boy. He attended St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, graduated from Yale University in 1950, and married Mimi Foss of New York City, in 1951. Howell began his career as a mill manager in the Edward Hines Lumber Company and rose through the ranks, becoming the president and Chairman of the Board. He also found time to serve on various boards, including that of the First National Bank of Winnetka. Outside of the business world, he supported the Boy Scouts of America for many years, including service as the president of the Northeast Illinois Council of the B.S.A. Howell and Mimi lived for many years and raised their children in Winnetka, Illinois. Howell had had a lifelong love of animals and the outdoors. He was an avid tennis player, photographer, hunter, fisherman, and horseman, and pursued these activities on a family ranch on the Shoshone River near Cody, Wyoming. He and Mimi also spent much time in Captiva, Florida, where they enjoyed boating, birding, and beach-combing with their dogs. Howell is survived by his loving wife Mimi of 62 years; children Howell H. III, Mark, Lynn Howard Hurley, Paul, Doug, and Deeda; 13 grandchildren; and three sisters, Loretta, Linn, and Deirdre. He is preceded in death by his parents. Memorial visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 120 Ela St. (corner of Franklin and Ela Streets), Barrington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at St. Anne Catholic Church, with a visitation held one hour prior to mass at church.
