Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel Obituary

Howell Joiner Martin, M.D. died suddenly on April 29, 2020.

He was born January 26, 1940 in Statesboro, GA. Son of Howell Calhoun Martin and Sarah Louise Joiner Martin.

He leaves a brother, Wyman Bradley Martin of Marietta, GA; three children, Converse Martin Kay of York, PA, Eulalie Louise Green of Birmingham, AL, and Howell Vincent Martin of Pensacola, FL. He also leaves 10 grandchildren.

Howell graduated from Valdosta High School, then Emory University in 1962 with a BA degree in chemistry. He then attended the Medical College of Georgia where he earned his medical degree.  He served in the U.S. Navy as a medical officer for three years in Pensacola and Charleston. He then went on to complete a residency in Urology at the Oschner Clinic in New Orleans and Mobile. In 1973, Howell opened his practice in Pensacola, FL where he practiced for 47 years. He was a highly skilled surgeon, and over the years saved the lives of thousands of patients, and relieved them of pain and suffering. Highly principled when treating patients, he always performed procedures that were in the patients’ best interest. His talents, skills and compassion will be greatly missed by the Pensacola community. Aside from medicine, Howell had many wonderful talents and interests. He was a musician, having played the clarinet in the Augusta Symphony Orchestra, was a college wrestler, artist, master chess player and private aviation pilot. He was a hard worker who always looked for the good in other people. His friends came from all walks of life.

With a generous, kind heart, he never stated the obvious and evoked a presence of calm and thoughtfulness in a storm. A problem solver and a man of great imagination, Howell Joiner Martin walked to the beat of a different drummer. All that knew him and loved him will miss him tremendously.

When safe to do so, a memorial service will be held in his honor.

Not sure what to say?

I was a patient of his for many years. I will miss his kind attention ! Robert Mays

Dr. Martin saved my life a couple of years ago. He was fun to talk to on many subjects, especially old aircraft. He had the coolest voice in the world, sort of an intellectual Chill Wills sound. Thanks for everthing Dr. Martin. Great guy, great surgeon. God speed to you, sir!

Sad to hear of his passing. He was a wonderful doctor to me in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Dr. Martin truly cared about his patients and sincerely tried to help them. He was especially kind and helpful towards me during a difficult time. I'll always appreciate his generosity and calm and methodical approach, he will be greatly missed. I am praying that the God of all comfort provides his family with strength and peace of mind.

I'm so sad to hear of Dr Martin's passing. Having worked for Dr Martin for many years, I will always smile at the memories. May you get the rest you never had time for!! Love you Peace be yours. Linda

The world has lost an asset. Howell was so kind and thoughtful, and never met a stranger. His love for his friends and family were so evident in his daily life. He had an ability to make everyone feel at ease and was the best listener ever. Rest in peace Howell, you will never be forgotten.

Thanks for saving me a couple of times, you will be missed ❤
