Not sure what to say?

I´m so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of my mom and dad (Don and Jane Mayfield) hanging out with the Harwell´s. Praying for the family and friends. Jennifer Faircloth

Julia and Garland: Condolences to you and family. May the love of God and Jesus Christ bring comfort to you!

Coffee and common sense at the FLC will always be a fond memory for me. Will miss your insight and humor.

What an individual, student of language, the Bible, and the human race! Hoyt´s life and wise observations were treasured by a grateful throng of co-workers, friends and admirers. His droll sense of humor, wisdom and incite made him a person like no other. His written words upon my husband´s death I will always treasure. Thank you, God, for this remarkable and worthy life.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Our prayers are with Elizabeth and the family at this time. We knew Hoyt from the time we all moved to Bluff Park more than 50 years ago. Our paths crossed at Shades Crest Baptist and in the community. Our children grew up together and Hoyt and I served on several committees together. Hoyt was always the calm, well informed voice that the community looked to for guidance and respected. In later years it was always nice to run into him at the Post Office or the Pig and chat. He will be missed.

The AP based me in Birmingham between assignments in Atlanta and Seattle. Hoyt was the consumate professional journalist but an incredible human being as well. Through his many connections he had opportunities for exclusive national stories to claim for himself but he didn't. He gave younger staff a chance to shine. He did with me and offered confidence and encouragement. Hoyt believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. When my first book became a NY Times Best Seller, I thought of Hoyt's...

I first came to know Mr. Harwell when I served as sports information director at Samford, but got to know him better while working for The Daily Mountain Eagle in Jasper. Mr. Harwell was a great journalist, but an even greater man. I will never forget his kindness and professionalism. My deepest condolences to all who knew and loved him, particularly his family. My life is richer because I knew him.

What a special man Hoyt was and he will be missed by all who were blessed to have known him!!! Cindy and I send our Love to Elizabeth and family!!
