Hugh Jump Obituary

Hugh Clyde Jump, 83, of Visalia, California, stepped into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Hugh (Teeter) was born in Glasgow, Kentucky on July 28, 1927 to Clarence Emmett and Bessie Jump. He came to California as a young child with his family during the Great Depression and settled in the Visalia area. In 1948 he married the love of his life, Esther Turner, to whom he was married for 54 years. Hugh worked from 1948 until his retirement in 1982 for the City of Visalia, as a firefighter and Airport Assistant Manager. He continued to stay active as a courier for the Bank of America and as Governor of the Visalia Moose Lodge following retirement. He and Esther also had a home ceramic business and they loved to travel. Hugh also loved to paint, draw, and do calligraphy; but his greatest delight in recent years was singing karaoke to entertain his friends and family. Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, and their son Hugh Jump, Jr. He is survived by his son David Jump (Debbie), and daughter Julia Doyal, both of Visalia, and his brother Douglas Jump. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Keri Lappen, Katy Mutter, Sarah Haahr, Melinda Stone, Anna Jump, Dalia Licea, and Richelle Doyal, along with ten great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 2:00pm at The Visalia Evangelical Free Church, 1305 W Main St., Visalia. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Miller Memorial Chapel, Visalia.

I liked that he was humble about his career. He told me there was nothing heroic about being a Fireman and that he, also, disliked the current trend to exalt mere public servants as heroes. I had a tremendous amount of respect for him from then on. He was a nice, likeable man the whole time I knew him, and was a good example of the humble, low-key qualities of people of his generation.

I was on the board of officers at the Visalia Moose Lodge with Hugh, he was always a very pleasant guy with a wisdom that was greatly needed at times. He was a good friend and I will miss him. He would perform at our Hee Haw Shows and always left everyone in stitches. God bless.

Our thoughts are with the Jump family with the loss of your Father and Grandfather. We were neighbors at Royal Oaks for many years and grew up with Keri and Katy in the 80's. Hugh was a nice man. - The VanWinkle Family (Lyn, Alana and Paul)
