I worked with Ambassador Montgomery in the early-to-mid 1990s. He was intelligent, literate, self-deprecating, restrained, witty, and wise. He was ever such on the brief occasions I ran into him in the years ahead. He was old-school; the compleat professional. That he chose federal service for his life's work was a huge benefit to the country.

I was privileged to meet Hugh Montgomery at Arlington National Cemetery
the day is longtime and beloved friend Dick Walters was buried. His eulogy of which I keep a copy was memorable.
Hugh was a true patriot and thanks to him and men like him the beacon of our democracy is brightly lit.
I enjoyed the lunches and lengthy phone conversations throughout the past 14 years.
I will cherish his memory and that if his beloved Annemarie.

We had the good fortune to have dinner with Amb Montgomery and Maria in January. He held us spellbound with stories of adventure, intrique and romance, all delivered with attention to detail, a wonderful sense of humor and deep emotion.
