My family knew his mother Esther Paton well and I remember meeting Hugh in the 1960s or so when Esther moved from her house into Neil McAthur's flat in Fairholm Grove, Camberwell. Neil, whom the Paton children called Colonel Mac, had been married to my aunt Dorothy [Dido, Dorrit] who swopped colonels during the last war.
