Hung Dere Obituary

Hung Dere May 12, 1927 - May 11, 2010 Hung passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 11th, one day short of his 83rd birthday. He was born in San Francisco and served in the Navy. He was a career civil engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers specializing in Northern California levees and dams. Two of his projects are still visible today, the Jetty in Half Moon Bay and the Sausalito Bay Model. He married Lillian Cape (deceased 2008) in 1949 and they divorced in 1972. Hung loved woodworking and crafted many items for his home, and he could repair anything. He was a constant thinker, always improving, streamlining or inventing things to help people. He also loved his hobbies of motorcycling, cooking, sewing, gardening, sailing and deep sea fishing. He was a member of the US Power Squadrons, promoting boating safety, and the Bay View Boat Club, where he enjoyed socializing with many friends. He is survived by daughters Janet (Bob) Komoto, Maureen Dere (Jo Stroud), and Karen Dere; grandson Jordan (Amanda Hendrix) Komoto; brother Donald (Gerri) Dere; sisters Jean (Richard) Yee, Susan (Al) Lee, Katie Tom, Gloria Wohlfeiler, and Audrey Dere (Raymond Kwan); brother-in-law Chun Lum Say; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister Eleanor Say. Hung's ashes will be scattered at sea by the Neptune Society of Belmont, CA. A celebratory tribute for family and friends will be held in July on the peninsula; please call 208-739-2777 for information.

Uncle Hungie,
I will always remember your warm, wonderful smile and your laughter. Whenever you laughed, your whole face would light up with joy and put a smile on mine. I can still remember running around your home on Larkin St in San Francisco. We had some good times there. I am sadden that I will not have the chance to see you again but you will always be in my heart as my Uncle Hungie.
Love you,
Wanda

When I was a kid, cousin Ricky and I spent the day on the hill outside Uncle Hungie's home in Moraga. I was amazed at the go cart my uncle had made from scratch. We rode that cart all day and had a blast! I will remember my Uncle for his quiet intelligence and his CHERRY Malibu. You Will Be Missed, Love Aaron

I had always admired him for his many talents--he was always thinking up new things to accomplish. He, once took a car totally apart and put it back together and it runs. Mechanics friends would ask him for help with cars that they can't figure how to fix. He would sew leather jackets for his friends that he design. He was a good handyman, mechanic, cook, and always helping others.
