Smyth County Sheriff’s Deputy Hunter Dakota Reedy, age 28, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, in the line of duty. Born in Abingdon, VA, Hunter was a beloved son, husband, father, and friend who dedicated his life to serving others.
Hunter was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Charles and Edna Reedy, and his maternal grandmother, Claudia McMahan.
Hunter graduated from Chilhowie High School in 2014. After graduation, he pursued further education in CDL and Electrical courses at the Trade School. At the age of 21, Hunter took the next step in his journey by enrolling in the Bristol Police Academy. Upon graduation, he served the Chilhowie community as a police officer before joining the Smyth County Sheriff’s Department.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Hunter enjoyed racing at the Wythe Raceway with his Papaw McMahan, winning several feature races. He also tried his hand at bull riding! With a larger-than-life personality and an infectious laugh, Hunter was known for his outgoing nature and his willingness to help anyone in need. Above all, he treasured his family, especially his children, whom he considered the most important part of his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Bettina Reedy, and their cherished children, Brantley, Kaden, and Kaede Belle. Also surviving are his loving parents, Chuck and Marie Reedy; his sister, Nicole Burkett, and her husband, Adam; and his maternal grandfather, Ken McMahan. Hunter is also remembered by his father-in-law, Bruce Wimmer; mother-in-law, Twanna Jackson and her husband, Nick; and his brother-in-law, Nick Jackson. He also leaves behind his grandparents-in-law, Reece and Peggy Maloyed, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately called him "Bubba": Grace Burkett, Dani Burkett, Andrick Burkett, Arianna Jackson, Asher Jackson, Aurora Jackson, Billie Jackson, and Cora Jackson. In addition, Hunter will be deeply missed by several aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends, and his extended law enforcement family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the Chilhowie Christian Church, 172 Apple Valley Road, Chilhowie, VA, with Pastor Shawn Womack and Pastor Wesley Eller officiating.
