Not sure what to say?

One of the sharpest minds that I encountered at Auckland University; a broadminded liberal who taught courses always characterized by subtlety & depth; a very 'straight-talking' man, although polite enough to suffer fools gladly; a profound influence on shaping my intellect; and smart enough to retire soon enough to have a retirement to enjoy!

Sad that Ian has passed on. He was a great influence on me, I must have been in one of the first courses he taught at the University of Auckland. I found his lectures fascinating and tried applying his insights into Scottish peasant farming to New Zealand farms, without his success. His sense of humour and critical eye enlivened all his writing. My best wishes to all his friends and family, I will be thinking of you on Saturday.

So sorry to hear about Ian. He was very supportive when I first arrived in Auckland as a young academic and I have fond memories of the evening meetings of the social history group we set up. We also taught a combined history/sociology course together. I was a a huge admirer of his work on the Scottish peasantry.
