Ilan Zadik Samson

I am so sorry that I didn't know until today that Ilan passed away last year. I knew him well from his love of Bach, and it was whilst I was the Guest Artist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra that our friendship began. He loved Bach, and played his flute when we met up in the evening to work our way through a volume of Bach Arias. I saw quite a lot of him in Tel Aviv, and then when he moved to London we met occasionally with our respective spouses. Ilan had sung with Paul Steinitz's London...

I was writing a piece about Israel when something reminded me of Ilan and I Googled his name. I was much saddened to learn that he had died just days earlier. I would like to offer my condolences to all of his family. Ilan and I met in 1956 at Harrow Tech in London, where we were both catching up with subjects we still needed for university entrance. We became quite good friends, sometimes together with another student, a quiet and pleasant Egyptian we called Red for some reason. A few weeks...

A privilege to know Ilan. Working with him was exacting and yet always humorous. Never a dull moment.
