International Friends

In the hours after the attack, her voice mail brimmed with more than 40 messages, in several languages, from almost every continent. Ingeborg Lariby — native of the Netherlands, citizen of everywhere — collected friends across the globe like postcards.

After years of wanderlust, Ms. Lariby, 42, put down roots in New York to work for Regus Business Centers, which had offices in the trade center. She gloried in being a New Yorker, taking up in-line skating (she had the scrapes to prove it) and zipping around the city.

She spoke five languages and was never known to date a man without an accent. Her favorite toast was "Carpe diem!" Her birthday was July 5, and when the fireworks began, she would joke that it was her adopted nation heralding her special day.

"Somehow, she managed to be at home in any part of the world, and then return to New York, to share her pictures and experiences with her less bold friends who lived vicariously through her," said a friend, Gerard Cunningham, a Scottish venture capitalist who lives in California and met her in Belgium.

Not sure what to say?

Cara, cara Ingeborg!!!

Thank you, Ingeborg, for saving my life 23 years ago today. I did not want to get on that stairway when the fire alarm went off but you wouldn’t take no for an answer. If I had waited a moment longer, I’d never have made it out.

To Ingeborg’s family and friends, please know that she spent the last moments of her life making people evacuate. She saved many lives, including mine.

Thinking of you. Your mantra Carpe Diem inspired me.

Thinking of you.

Thinking of you ! Like every year ! Love, Regina

Thinking of you now and every year on this day.

You were, are, always will be beautiful inside and out.

Ingeborg, it's been a while since my last post but it doesn't mean I have forgotten your smile or positive disposition. You were an amazing soul, who touched many lives and 20 years later you are an important factor in our hearts....may you rest will always.
